This project focuses on researching composite materials for vessel hulls and compartment partitions. The main tasks include characteristics analyses of glass fiber reinforced plastic (GFRP) laminated with glass fibers and unsaturated polyester resins and laminations of vessel hulls with selecting suitable combinations between Kevlar fiber and Vinyl ester resin, Carbon fiber and Epoxy resin, and Glass fiber and unsaturated polyester resin. Six hulls with combinational fibers and resins and one sandwich panel with GFRP inserting Balsa wood are laminated. For mechanical performance analyses, seven specimens cut from hulls are made and tested. Six specimens are constructed by adding intumescent fire resistance coating and fire resistance wooden board for fire resistance performance testing. Test results show that composite plastic with Kevlar fiber layers separately distributed into the glass fiber layers has good mechanical performance than that of concentrative lamination of Kevlar fiber. For fire resistance tests, 3 specimens are demonstrated to have 1 hour fire resistance performance and 3 are in half hour performance. |
