In this study, the influences of environmental variability over the shelf off Rio de la Plata on abundance of Illex argentinus in the Southwest Atlantic is investigated. Statistics published by Overseas Fisheries Development Council of the Republic of China and Falkland Islands Government Fishery Department on Illex argentinus were used to calculate CPUE as a measure of squid abundance. SST and chlorophyll a concentration derived from SeaWiFS images over the shelf off river estuary were used as environmental indices. It was found that squid CPUE is positively related to SST and chlorophyll a concentration over the shelf south of Rio de la Plata estuary from May and August prior to the fishing season respectively. |
