This study firstly collected casualty statistic data of fishing vessels from USA, UK, Canada and Japan, and reviewed statistic data related national fishing vessel casualties from some departments. The number of fishing vessel casualties is higher than that of other vessels, especially small fishing boats. In Taiwan fishing vessels machinery failure is the most serious one in all categories of casualties. The questionnaire in this study was carried out. There were total 1,520 copies of the questionnaire forms sent to fisherman members of all 39 fishery associations. Propeller twisted by floating wasted ropes, machinery failure due to damage of main engine or auxiliary engine parts and ship overturned or sunk due to heavy weather and strong waves are the top three of response rate causing the casualties. Therefore the following suggestions are mentioned: enhancing safety inspection of fishing vessels, ensuring professional training for fishermen, establishing safety concepts in fishery industry. |
