Two trials, one growth and the other metabolism, were conducted to investigate the toxic effects of fumonisin (FB) containing feeds on the growth performance and metabolism of the toxicant in tilapia, a presumably susceptible species to the mycotoxin. In growth trial, 27 Oreochromis niloticus (ON) and 27 Oreochromis mossambica♀×Oreochromis niloticus♂(OO) were randomly allotted into 9 tanks of 300 L/tank and raising for 6 wks. Three treatments were formed by using commercial feeds for tilapia to supplemented self-produced FB so as to contain 0, 5 or 50 ppm of the toxin. In metabolism trial, 9 ON and 9 OO were randomly allotted into 3 aquaria of 20 L/each, of which 3 previous dietary treatments were allotted into and raising for 2 wks. The trial was repeated 3 times. Data of feed consumption, bodyweight gain and feed conversion ratio (FCR) thereby calculated were collected. FB contents in feeds, excreta and fish were also analyzed. The results showed that dietary content of FB exerted no apparent adverse effects on growth performance whereas FB content in fish was increased along with increasing dietary FB content. |
