Dimethyl-ether (DME) is a new type of alternative fuel for diesel engines. With various sources of raw materials and wide range of applications, DME has now become a potential clean energy source to which many nations devoting. DME possesses the characteristics of dissolving in diesel fuel. Engine tests are performed in this study by using different ratios of DME and diesel blending fuels.
The experimental results show the best results are demonstrated by D10 fuel. Using a blenf fuel of 10 wt% DME, the engine maximum brake torque developed only decreases slightly. Using the original setting of injection timing and no EGR, the bsNOx of D10 fuel increases slightly under low and medium lads and stay at the same level under high engine loads. Comparing the results of using fishing fuel A, a 62% ~ 72% decrease of bsNOx with a potential 14.3 % decrease of smoke are obtained for D10 fuel by retarding the injection timing. Using 10% EGR for D10 fuel, the bsNOx decreases by 8.4% ~ 52%, while the smoke decreases by 0 ~ 21%. It is recommended for fishing boats to use D10 fuel with injection timing slightly retarded.
It is also analysed in this study, from the point of view of the modification of fuel system, on the feassibility of application of D10 fuel on fishing boats. An example of a fishing boat with 800L fuel cabin is used to demonstrate the required deployment of the pressurized DME barrel and pressurized mixing barrel. The procedures of fuel mixing are illustrated. |
