The fisheries data of the Taiwanese tuna longline fishery and the WCPFC longline fisheries were used to examine the environmental effects, in particularly the decadal variability, on the CPUE of striped marlin in the Pacific. The GAMs results showed that SST is an important environmental factor in explaining the CPUE variance. Both in the North and South Pacific, the standardized CPUE of striped marlin are significantly and negatively correlated to the time series of SSTs in the regions of 20-30o Latitude, especially in the western part off Taiwan and Australia respectively. As the PDO has been mostly negative since the late 1990s, and the western Pacific Warm Pool kept warming, the accompanied higher SST in the western and central Pacific could result the abundance of striped marlin to a low level. |
