A Centennial Video History of Agriculture in Taiwan-Venturing Toward the Blue Ocean
Taiwan’s fishing industry has undergone drastic changes over the past century. Early fishermen relied mainly on bamboo rafts, stone weirs or the pulling of nets onshore. Armed with the most advanced navigation equipment, their modern peers can now sail to any corner of the oceans. Extensive farming was the norm in the old days when farmers had only a few choices, such as milkfish and grass carp. By contrast, generations of technical enhancement has made it possible to cultivate a multiplicity of fish endowed with lucrative economic value.

By telling the life stories of a handful of local fishermen, this film aims to track the evolution of Taiwan’s seafaring fisheries and fish farming dating back to the early part of the last century. It will give you a glimpse of how local fishermen have overcome challenges and attained breakthroughs—in particular, how they have applied their wisdom and innovation to crafting fleets that traverse the oceans and one virtual kingdom of aquaculture after another.
