The main target of this year was to continue with the work of the previous project in maintaining the Fisheries Agency’s “Marine Ecology Database Management System.” The primary task was to collect, combine, and create archives for the past and ongoing ecology survey data of coastal areas of Taiwan Island and its outlying islands; and complete, through data integrating and sharing, the establishment of a web portal for the extensive marine data.
In the past, most of the complex and large-scale research data collected from various research projects were simply compiled using paper records or some word processor software (e.g. Excel.) When there is a need to study and analyze these heterogeneous datasets, it takes tremendous manpower and time to deal with them. Only through the setup of databases can research data be efficiently and speedily stored and accessed. Therefore, this project developed a long-term database and utilized up-to-date formats for ecological distribution data to integrate marine organisms’ species lists, physical description, ecological distribution survey data, etc. By way of better data quality and more accurate search outcome, the project can facilitate “sharing biodiversity resources fairly and justly” promoted in the Executive Yuan’s "Biodiversity Action Plan." Furthermore, the database can be integrated with other biodiversity-related databases such as TaiBIF and FishBase. |
