This study examined the taxonomy and reproductive biology of flyingfish. From March to July of 2007, flyingfish were purchased weekly from set net operators in Suao, Ilan. Additional fish samples since April were also occasionally purchased from fish markets in Hualien, Taidong, Pingtung, and flyingfish was purchased from local fishermen in Orchid Island (Taidong). The study identified three common species of flyingfish in the waters of eastern Taiwan - namely white-fin flyingfish (Cheilopogon unicolor), margined flyingfish (Cheilopogon cyanopterus) and yellow-wing flyingfish (Cypselurus poecilopterus). Also some other species e.g. stained flyingfish (Cheilopogon spilonotopterus) were commonly found and Cypselurus atrisignis occasionally seen in Orchid Island..
The GSI values obtained from different species can differentiate their spawning seasons as well their spawning grounds respectively. All these information would be valuable to Taiwan’s fisheries authority for the decision-making strategies in the future. However, the GSI from the most commonly collected three species in north-eastern Taiwan reached their highest value in June of 2006 which contradicted with the data from white-fin flyingfish in April and margined flyingfish in May 2007 respectively. The GSI variation of the two flyingfishes related to environmental changes probably needs further study. |
