Generalized additive models (GAMs) were applied to examine the relative influences of various environmental factors, including sea surface temperature, chlorophyll-a concentration, wind field, sea level height anomaly, bathymetry and slope, on swordfish CPUE in the North Pacific and South Atlantic. Longline fishery data obtained from Overseas Fisheries Development Council for the analysis consisted of 10 year (1998-2007) time series. GAM analysis results indicate that SST, wind field, chlorophyll-a concentration, bathymetry and slope can explained 2.4-3.4% of variance in nominal CPUE of swordfish. Among those examined, SST is the most important environmental factor. |
