The waters around Siao-Liu-Ciou island had high biodiversity and abundance. We totally recognized 209 species of catch fish, 47 reef fishes by scuba diving, 208 and 89 species of shellfishes and crustaceans in tidal zones. These animals showed clear seasonal and inter-annual succession, and hot-spots were also different for varied species, possibly due to the different environmental conditions. The biomass of benthic macro-algae had apparent seasonal and spatial differences, higher in late Summer or early Autumn. This year exhibited higher species number and diversity of macro-algae than previous years, while species composition was similar and dominated by Red algae. Generally, the macro-algae was not “bloom” in this study area. Plankton was also relatively diverse and abundant in the Siao-Liu-Ciou waters. In all, 269 phytoplankton species, 143 copepods, 182 fish larvae, 46 siphonophore species were recorded during our 3-years investigation. The abundance of plankton communities showed obvious seasonal change, Spring and Summer had higher abundance and with larger difference among stations, deeper water had higher abundance than that of surface waters; however, abundance was generally lower in this year than previous years. |
