DNA barcoding is a new technique that uses a short DNA sequence as a molecular tool for species-level identification. Therefore, we are planning to construct a database which contains the cytochrome c oxidase subunit 1 (COI) sequences for most important economical fish species of Taiwan in this project. This database can be used to identify the unidentified species, larval fishes or eggs, damaged specimens, or even tissue samples, to prevent the smuggling. Indeed, we already successfully identified two smuggling fishes which were Reinhardtius hippoglossoides and Saurida tumbil. At the end of this first year project, we have collected 221 fish species, and sequenced about 200 among them, In the following two years, we will try to collect the other 95 economical species in our hunting list., In addition, we also presented five posters in the 2nd International Barcode of Life Conference in September 18 -20, 2007. They were: (1) DNA barcoding of Taiwan’s fish species, (2) Comparative performance of the COI and cyt b genes in DNA barcoding of fishes, (3) Applying DNA barcode on identification of larval fish can improve community analysis, (4) Mitochondrial DNA barcoding identification employing on larval fish community for gobioid fishes in the estuary of Langyang river basin, Taiwan, and (5) Identification of cetacean meat in the markets of Taiwan based on mtDNA markers. |
