Study and survey of ocean sunfish began in 2003. The first thesis that studied in age and growth of Masturus lanceolatus is finished in Jane 2007（Li, 2007）. We had tagged two fishes in 27 October 2005 and 8 November 2007 at offshore of Hualien respectively. More one fish was tagged in 11 December 2007 at the same place. The tag will be released in 31 March 2008. We are continuing to collect and analysis the fishy data and in additional beginning study of reproductive in sharptail mola by collecting ovary and testis in this year.
The total numbers of catch in sharptail mola are 2,894 and weight 296,080 kilogram and average weight per fish is 102.31（kg） by set net in 2007.
The condition of catch was not good. The set net rested in July and August. The catches do not similar to passed years from September to November in this year. The age range from 4 to 11 are the most important target fishes, the next are from 15 to 16, the third are age 19.
We calculate that the age of maturity of male sharptail mola should more than 120（cm） in standard length, older than age 9. The ovary does not develop until the standard length less than 135（cm）, about age 11 to 14. We think that the breeding season should be from May to Jane. All of catches are not maturity in the east waters of Taiwan except only one. The fish was female and 175（cm） in standard length, age 20 to 21.
Believe it will come true. When this study, age and growth, reproduction, migration route, variation of population, has been finished, we can make a practical management strategy in the future. |
