In this study, the influences of environmental variability over the shelf off Rio de la Plata on abundance of Illex argentinus in the Southwest Atlantic is investigated. It was found that squid CPUE is negatively related to wind driven Ekman transport off the shelf edge in previous winter. Squid CPUE is negatively related to the strength of onshore Ekman transport prevailing the shelf break to the north of Rio de la Plata in May previous year. It is also negatively related to the strength of northward Ekman transport off northern Patagonian shelf in July previous year. The possible mechanism that the strong southwest winds off Southern Brazil in May 2003 leads to the low squid CPUE in 2004 has been investigated. |
