This integrated project is to investigate the biodiversity of Lan-yu Island and Green Island and its current and past status. Fish survey shows there are 620 species belonging to 69 families in Lanyu and 643 species belonging to 76 families. In the subtidal regions, fish species declined in Lanyu but remained normal in Green Island. We have surveyed coral 20 barnacles species in Green Island and Lanyu waters, with 6 new records. Macroalgal community in Green Island is variable in season and depth while that in Lanyu shows season, depth and site differences. Crashing boat seems to affect macroalgal composition by increasing species and coverage in the waters of 10-m depth, but it needs more surveys to confirm its influence and its recovery. Most fishing boats and fishery activities centralized at NanLiao fishery harbor of Green Island. The reef fisheries resources seem to be exhausted in Green Island waters today. The amount and biodiversity of coral reef fisheries had decreased in Orchard Island. Several high price species including leopard coral trout, humphead wrasse, yellow striped snapper could not be found in the recent years. It may be related to heavy catches of dive fishing and gill net in Orchard Island for the recent years, and need further studies to confirm. |
