DNA barcoding is a new technique that uses a short DNA sequence as a molecular tool for species-level identification and can be used to identify the uncertain species, larval fishes or eggs, damaged specimens, or even tissue samples, and prevent the smuggling. Therefore, we are planning to construct a database which contains the Cytochrome c oxidase subunit 1 (COI) sequences of 335 important Taiwan economical fish species in this project.
Now we have collected 284 economical fishes in 78 families and 21 orders, then sequencing 257 among them. In the following year, we will try to collect the other 73 economical species in our hunting list, including fresh water fishes, oceanic fishes, demersal fishes, culturing fishes, and exotic fishes. By constructing this database, we not only increase the cryobanking samples of Taiwan fishes but will upload the COI sequences to the Barcode of Life Data Systems in the future. Recently, we have successfully identified several smuggling fishes which were dissected in fillet or seriously spoiled, though we could not tell where these smuggling fishes are imported from. |
