The pelagic tuna fishery is one of the most important fisheries worldwide, especially for its high commercial value. Consequently, many of the bycatch wildlife species such as sharks, cetaceans, sea birds, and sea turtles have drawn much attention for their conservation in various international tuna fishery management organizations. We therefore should understand the updated information/trend on bycatches and incidental catches for these ecological related species on their conservation status as well as newly developed fisheries technology avoid catching them. In addition, we can participate fully by preparing scientific documents on ERS to be presented at the international fishery management organizations so as to conserve and manage the bycatch/incidental catch species from tuna fisheries. Modifications of fishing gear and procedures were developed to reduce dolphin kill.
In this report, within 6 months we have tentatively overview the shark and cetacean issues and proposed the application of life history strategy approach to manage ecological related species, by using shark and cetacean species as examples (attachments). |
