This study examined the taxonomy and reproductive biology of flyingfish. From late January to early July 2006, flyingfish were purchased weekly from set net operators in Suao, Ilan. Additional fish samples since April were also occasionally purchased from fish markets in Hualien, Chengung port (Taidong), Hobihu port (Pingtung), and flyingfish roe was purchased from a processing plant in Badotze (Keelung). The study identified three common species of flyingfish in the waters of eastern Taiwan - namely white-fin flyingfish (Cheilopogon unicolor), margined flyingfish (Cheilopogon cyanopterus) and yellow-wing flyingfish (Cypselurus poecilopterus). For all three species females had greater body weight than males. Also some other species e.g. stained flyingfish (Cheilopogon spilonotopterus) were commonly found and Cypselurus atrisignis occasionally seen in both Green Island and Orchid Island. The white-fin flyingfish and yellow-wing flyingfish both possess the greatest difference in sex ratio rate (female numbers :male numbers)1:3.4, followed by the margined flyingfish 1:2.7.
The GSI from the most commonly collected three species in Ilan and north-eastern Taiwan all reached their highest value in June which corresponds to the harvest season in the vicinity of the waters. Hence the study confirms their spawning season during this time of the year. The individual fecundity estimates from the four species are as follows: 50363 in margined flyingfish, 45809 in stained flyingfish, 31165 eggs in white-fin flyingfish, 11803 in yellow-wing flyingfish. The information would be helpful for the flyingfish fisheries management in the future. |
