The Gelidium species grow along the north and northeastern coast of Taiwan. It was found distributed at the sublittoral zone, of about 3 meters under the seawater or the tidal pools of inter-tidal zone. Although lifecycle has been reported for some species of Gelidium, none of Formosan Gelidium has been recorded. In this research, we collected Gelidium spp. of different morphology for sporangia observation and spore germination, in order to identify the different species and their gametophytes and sporophytes. Due to the overlapping of growth periods of sporophyte and gametophyte, among the samples collected we found specimens of an unique morphology, preliminarily identified as new species, contained carposporangiua and carposporophyte. Carposporangia were significantly different from the tetrasporangia observed under microscope. They had incompletely separated cabs at transverse section of mature biloculate cystocarps which were located at the center of branch or near the axeis. It was speculated that this new species might be the gametophyte of all the different species known in this area. Carpospores of this species were larger than the tetraspores found in other three Gelidium species. The germination was found similar for carpospores and tetrasporesof diffe3rent species. Regarding the growth of seedlings from pore germination, it was found low temperature and short light period were favor for the growth of Gelidium seedlings, especially the plain-seawater without nutrients. Enriched medium usually promoted the epiphytic diatoms and disturb Gelidium growth.
Outdoor growths were also compared between the cotton, Nylon and hemp threads for the hanging of thalli fragments horizontally or vertically at early or late growth seasons. The experiments were conducted at two places, Taipei County Hatchery and Ilan Private abalone grow-out tanks and the result were compared. |
