Chinese white dolphin,(Sousa chinensis), has been listed in the red book of IUCN, with first priority in China. In the last decade, Hong Kong and China continually set natural ecological preservation park for this rare species. It is also upgrated as endangered species under the Wildlife Conservation Law (WCL) of Taiwan in April 2009. The highly polluted or disturbed environment due to high civilization and fishery activities in Taiwan's west coastal waters have threaten the survival of this species. Based on the previous studies, we have confirmed that their habitats cover at the west coastal waters, from Miaoli to Tainan counties, and have large number in the Coastal Waters of Chiayi County and Wai-san-ding Sandbar seems the hotspot where should be nursing ground and must be conserved. This project will continue investigating the spatial distribution and habitat characteristics of the Sousa population in the west coastal waters. Furthermore, we will investigate the interaction between fishery and Chinese white dolphin. Our results are expected to serve as critical baseline data for making conservation policy in the near future. |
