The Fisheries Agency launched a project to evaluate ARs in waters off Keelung City (Dawulung, Keelung islet and Wanhaishiang sites), Taipei County (Shenao and Aodi sites) and Ilan County (Shihcheng, Dali and Tungao sites) in this year. Most of the ARs remained intact as observed in 32 diving surveys. The AR density appeared to be much higher at Dawulung, Wanhaishiang and Tungao AR sites. A total of 109 fish species from 71 genera in 34 families were recorded at these 8 reef sites. The lowest biomass of fish standing stock was 2.6 kg, which occurred at Dawulung site. This site was also characterized by heavy sedimentation and a high AR density. It is thus recommended that further AR emplacement at Dawulung site should be suspended. At Keelung islet, Dali or Tungao site, the fish biomass was 14-25 kg. At Wanhaishiang, Aodi or Shihcheng site, it was 30-34 kg. The highest biomass was 56.2 kg, which occurred at Shenao site. Net-tangling on more than 30% reef units appeared on the electric utility pole reefs at Wanhaishiang site and on the concrete reefs at Dali AR site. Cast-net removal is recommended for these two specific sites. |
