The main target of this year is to continue with the work of the previous project in maintaining the Fisheries Agency’s “Marine Ecology Database Management System.” The primary task is to collect, combine, and create archives for the past and ongoing ecological survey data of coastal areas of Taiwan Island and its outlying islands; and complete, through data integrating and sharing, the establishment of a web portal for the extensive marine information.The project this year, besides using common ecological format to collect data, is to archive last year’s results. In addition, it will apply the method and theory in data quality verification as well as utilize geographic tools and the latest version of Catalogue of Life in Taiwan to correct and amend data collected in the past five years. This is to ensure the improvement of data quality and the accuracy of search results. After their quality is verified, the data can then be uploaded to the website. Another thing is that in the strategies of the Biodiversity Promotion Plan, sharing of biodiversity information is one of the essential items. Even though this project has been ongoing for 5 years, its established database is still not open to the public due to the IPR problem. Therefore, in the first half of the year, the project will conduct a survey (using e-mails) to determine the willingness of various project directors in providing open access to their data. For those who are willing to open their data immediately, the project will present on its website the metadata of these directors’ projects and the raw data of their surveys. The project will also modify its web system so that the system can automatically open up a project’s data according to the pre-set time frame. Furthermore, in the second half of the year, the project will follow the example of TaiBIF and link to the global database in order to strengthen information sharing. |
