The aim of this three-year project is to evaluate the effectiveness of the 26 "Fishery Resources Conservation Zones" in Taiwan by investigating the composition, distribution, and abundance or coverage of the marine organisms living in the Conservation Zones. In the third year (2012), we will carry on the remaining seven conservation zones in west regions (Wan-Wa, Siao-Men, Ci-Mei, Dong-Shih, Gu-Nen-Tou, Jhang-Hua Fishery Conservation Zone). The investigation includes collecting in situ information and background data, and conducting environmental and biological surveys on the conservation zones. The evaluation of Tai-Ping island in South China Sea will focus on literature reviews. We will interview fishermen and stakeholders on each conservation zones. Finally, we will evaluate the current status of fishery conservation zones and their target species, and recommend new conservation strategies and restoration methods. |
