The direct benefit of utilizing biodiesel fuel is to reduce the dependence on fossil fuel import, while easing off the concerned global warming issue. The indirect benefit is to impel the recultivation of low-level farming land, while solving the problem of idleness of rural population. Counsil of Agriculture, and Bureau of Energy, Ministry of Economic Affairs have initiated a joint venture of impelling the utilization of biodiesel fuel.
This study use domestic biodiesel fuel of different sources, including sunflower seed, waste cooking oil, and oil of cooking waste, as the alternative fuel for a diesel engine. Engine tests are performed under different loads and speeds to study the fuel consumption and exhaust emissions, while comparing the results with those using fishing boat fuel A.
The results show that the fuel consumption of B100 and B20 biodiesel is higher than that of petroleum diesel. In the aspect of exhaust emissions, the bsCO of both B100 and B20 is lower than petroleum diesel. The smoke expelled by B100 is eminently lower than petroleum diesel. The smoke expelled by B20 is higher under lower engine speeds, while lower under higher engine speeds than petroleum diesel.
Dimethyl ether (DME) may be produced from coal, while possesing the potential of reducing exhaust emissions of diesel engines. It is therefore an important alternative clean fuel for diesel engines. This study fabricates a DME fuel system to provide as a basis for future study. |
