1.Seafood gift box for Chinese New Year
The fish and seafood used in the Fisheries Agency's Lunar New Year gift boxes are displayed at a press event at the Grand Hotel in Taipei on January 8th. The gift boxes, launched jointly by the agency and the hotel, contain fish steaks, locally farmed silver pampano, grouper and abalone, and cuttlefish balls.
2. AFA: consumer should check certification while buying organic vegetables
The non-profit Consumer's Foundation said its latest pesticide residue testing conducted on 12 randomly chosen fresh vegetables resulted in a failure rate of 33.33 percent, while 66.66 percent of produce labeled or advertised as "organic" was found to contain large amounts of pesticide residue. Agriculture and Food Agency under the Ministry of Agriculture (MOA) noted that suppliers of farm produce incorrectly labeled as organic can face fines ranging from NT$30,000 to NT$300,000 ((US$968-US$9,683) in accordance with the Organic Agriculture Promotion Act and related regulations. It also urged consumers to check whether vendors selling organic vegetables have a certificate indicating they have been certified to sell such produce and that it contains the name of the certification body and a registration number.
