1.Taiwan Actively Protects Crew Rights, No Tolerance for Noncompliant Operators with Salary Arrears
On August 7, 2024, a press conference was held by a civic organization and Indonesian crew members to highlight the issue of long-standing salary arrears on deep-sea fishing vessels. The Fisheries Agency conducted a labor rights inspection on the vessel on July 22, 2024, and found that nine foreign crew members had not been paid for 11 to 15 months.. On August 6, the Agency convened a meeting with the operator and the intermediary to discuss progress, and the operator has promised to settle the crew’s salaries by August 9. The Fisheries Agency will handle the matter with a principle of diligence and fairness, committed to protecting the crew’s rights. The Agency urges deep-sea fishing vessel operators not to have any illusions and to adhere to regulations and contractual obligations for the benefit of foreign crew members.
