1. The Fisheries Agency is conducting a buyback program for distant water tuna longline fishing vessels until 2/27.
In response to changes in the fishing environment, the continuous decline in marine resources, and international organizations' efforts to reduce fishing vessel carbon emissions, the Fisheries Agency launched the "Buyback Program for Small Distant Water Tuna Longline Fishing Vessels" in 2023. The program aims to purchase small distant water fishing vessels and establish an exit mechanism for fishing boats. The buyback process for this year has already begun, with a buyback price of NT$40,000 per ton. Vessel owners who do not intend to continue operations are reminded to register by the February 27 deadline.
2. To prevent Taiwan oysters from being mixed with foreign oysters, the Fisheries Agency plans to include wholesalers in the traceability management system.
Oysters are a popular seafood item in Taiwan. To prevent Taiwanese oysters from being substituted with imported oysters, the Ministry of Agriculture's Fisheries Agency, in addition to promoting production and sales traceability, is planning to include oyster wholesalers in the traceability management system. Fisheries Agency Deputy Director-General Chen Chien-Yo stated that informational meetings have been held in Yunlin and Chiayi, the main oyster-producing areas. The trial implementation will begin in 2025, and once fully implemented, wholesalers who do not participate in the traceability system will face penalties, along with an increase in random inspections.
