1.Fisheries institute designates new species of clams
The Fisheries Research Institute has designated a type of shellfish first thought to be the Meretrix lusoria (common Oriental clam) as an endemic species and named it the Meretrix taiwanica. The institute, which is overseen by the Council of Agriculture, late last month submitted research material to the international journal Molluscan Research.
2. Kaohsiung harbor to deliver seafood to remote communities
Kaohsiung’s Kezihliao Fishing Harbor unveiled a refrigerated truck that is to serve seafood to remote communities in the municipality’s Namasia , Liouguei and Neimen districts. The cold-chain service is part of an NT$18 million collaboration between the Kaohsiung City Government and the Tzukuan Fisheries Association to refurbish the harbor’s fish market. The truck, valued at NT$1.2 million, is to play an important role in providing the residents of Kaohsiung’s underserved districts with domestically produced seafood, it said.
