1. Taiwan succeeds in artificially breeding Spanish mackerel
Taiwan's Fisheries Research Institute (FRI) said that it had completed an experiment to artificially inseminate narrow-barred Spanish mackerels at sea, successfully reproducing fries. The method is expected to become viable for the restoration of the country's narrow-barred Spanish mackerel stock in two years and for farming of the fish in five years, according to the FRI.
2. Taiwan revives critically endangered garden orchid
After years of experiments, an agricultural research station in southern Taiwan announced Tuesday its success in modifying and reproducing a once endangered garden orchid species. The Tainan District Agricultural Research and Extension Station, a botanical laboratory run by the Executive Yuan's Council of Agriculture, has successfully bred the purple garden orchid (Spathoglottis pubescens) and biologically modified it into the fifth generation yellow-flowered "Tainan 5," through crossbreeding, the station said in a statement.
