1.Gov't to seek compensation for bad Turkish egg deal
On July 19th, Council of Agriculture (COA) Minister Chen Chi-chung said the government would seek compensation for 127.26 metric tons of imported Turkish eggs found to contain banned carcinogens."The government will ask [the Turkish supplier] for compensation under the terms of the contract," Chen said, regarding five shipments of eggs found to contain traces of banned nitrofurans that were intercepted at the border earlier in July.The eggs were all destroyed and have not entered the local market, according to Taiwan's Food and Drug Administration.
2. Labor Ministry set to permit hiring of 28,000 extra migrant workers
The Ministry of Labor announced that it plans to loosen criteria for the employment of migrant workers so an additional 28,000 can be brought into the country to help address Taiwan's labor shortage. The new policy, which targets workers in the manufacturing, construction, agricultural and care giving industries, is expected to be introduced in mid-June at the earliest, the ministry said.
