1. COA to promote local mozzarella cheese production with new courses
The Council of Agriculture (COA) has designed a pair of courses to teach mozzarella cheese-making techniques in an effort to bolster an industry that is still in its early stages in Taiwan. Livestock Research institute said it has historically done relatively little research on cheese compared with other dairy products. However, it is now looking to change that, it said, as food preferences in Taiwan diversify and a local cheese industry has begun to take root.
2. Global warming could drive shrimp away
Coral shrimp was previously a major catch for fishers operating in the area between Kaohsiung’s Cieding and Zuoying districts, but has gradually faded from residents’memories. According to the research done by National Sun Yat-sen University’s Department of Oceanography, coral shrimp, has migrated 55km north of coastal waters near Kaohsiung due to global warming. This area is where subtropical shrimp such as the Parapenaeopsis sinica is found. To produce the carbon-reducing seaweed Asparagopsis sp. It is expected that the low-carbon nature of seaweed farming and the effect of feeding it to cattle and sheep can reduce methane emissions and contribute to the net-zero emissions roadmap.
