1. Typhoon Koinu batters eastern, central and southern Taiwan: Central Weather Bureau (CWB) land warning at 7:15 a.m. on October 5 says Typhoon Koinu is in the waters southeast of Eluanbi and slowly moving westward. Its storm circle has enveloped Hualien County, Taitung County and all areas south of Taichung. Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries Agency and other related governmental organization all warned earlier that prevention measures must be prepared.
2. Taiwan inspectors find 33 live animals in bag on flight from Bangkok: Inspectors from the Animal and Plant Health Inspection Agency (APHIA) caught a groundhog, and found a bag with two pup otters, a cardboard box containing 28 live Indian star tortoises, and two dead animals they were unable to identify, on a flight from Bangkok to Taoyuan International Airport on October 4.
