1. Fisheries Agency Promotes Pacific Bluefin Tuna with Diverse Culinary Uses
From April to June each year, Pacific bluefin tuna migrate through Taiwan’s waters, marking the peak fishing season. Known as the “Wagyu of the Sea” for its rich, evenly marbled texture that melts in the mouth, each part of the bluefin offers distinct flavors and is highly prized by gourmets when prepared in a variety of culinary styles. To deepen public understanding of bluefin tuna and boost local consumption, the Fisheries Agency held a press conference on May 19 to promote Pacific bluefin and demonstrate how to enjoy the whole fish—from head to tail—for the ultimate tasting experience. Starting May 26, consumers can also search the “Go Buy Fish! Bluefin Tuna Zone” online to order fresh, locally sourced bluefin tuna delivered directly to their homes.
2. Fisheries Agency Secures Release of Fishing Boat Captain Detained by Japan
The Taiwanese fishing vessel "Hung Tsai Tou No. 6," registered in Suao, was boarded by a Japanese government vessel on the morning of May 20 at the coordinates 24°16.67' N, 122°43.25' E. The Japanese authorities took the captain off the vessel for investigation. Following negotiations by Taiwan’s Fisheries Agency and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the captain was safely released and returned to his vessel after Taiwan provided a guarantee. The Fisheries Agency urges all fishing vessels to keep their Vessel Monitoring System (VMS) and Automatic Identification System (AIS) activated during operations and to remain aware of their operating locations and potential risks, in order to ensure the safety of life and property. If any interference by foreign government vessels is encountered, fishers are advised to report the incident to the Fisheries Radio Station or call 118 so the government can provide timely assistance.
