- Taiwan invests big to boost cold chain storage capabilities: Cold chain capacity is crucial to increasing country’s competitiveness in agri-industry; Taiwan government has started two-year initiative with a budget of NT$12.6 billion (US$420 million) to build out the cold chain capacity for its agricultural produce. As part of the plan, two flagship logistics centers will be established in Taoyuan and Pingtung, in addition to five cold chain facilities in Yunlin, Chiayi, Tainan, Kaohsiung, and Pingtung.
- Council of Agriculture Council is looking at measures to stabilize agricultural markets and prices: After China suspend imports of citrus fruits and two types of fish from Taiwan, Council of Agriculture (COA) is assisting fishers and farmers seek new markets, and would also provide subsidies. Taiwan is as well not ruling out seeking arbitration from the WTO over China’s banning of Taiwanese citruses, which are listed as part of accepted agricultural products under the Economic Cooperation Framework Agreement. Especially, starting on August 8, any purchases from platforms such as the Farmers’ Association of more than NT$600 would receive a NT$200 agri-tourism voucher, Chen said, adding that the council is planning to hand out 300,000 vouchers.
